Great Movie!!! by M. D. Culp
This movie tells the story of a mountain boy who goes from runnin’ moonshine to entering local demolition derbies and dirt races to earn money for his family. Eventually, our Hero, Elroy Jackson Jr. makes it to the heights of the sport, although that is not covered in the movie.
Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors of all time, and I was elated when this movie finally became available on DVD. Great story, great cast, great theme song (”I Got A Name” performed by Jim Croce).
the last american hero by Joachim F. Hildebrandt
Being a nascar fan I had pleasure following the career and familiar ways of the “hero”…
Last American Hero by John Estes
This is 5 stars if you are a true race fan. Otherwise, it’s still an interesting story. This film is loosely based on Tom Wolfe’s essay about the younger days of Junior Johnson, although for some reason they changed his name for the film. (Notice, though, that Junior himself was a paid racing consultant on the film.) The race footage is very well done and there is some good footage from the old Southern 500. Bridges and Busey are a lot of fun to watch together as well.If you like stock car racing and wonder what the old days were like when the sport was still developing, you’ll love this film. Only pity is it’s not on DVD.
(Also another great film (although a little cheesy) about the old days is 43 The Petty Story starring Darren McGavin as Lee Petty and Richard Petty as himself AND Dale Inman AND Buddy Baker!!! It is a classic look at the old values that are still carried forward in the sport to some degree. It also has some insight to what NASCAR was and what it has become..Some really good vinatge racing footage is also included.) Also a pity it’s not on DVD…We need to prolong the life of these smaller “special interest” films. Anyway have fun, great summmer stuff.
Racing Driver Drama by Brian J. Greene
I have not read the Tom Wolfe essay this story is apparently based on, but as a film it works quite well. Jeff Bridges, looking like a rougher member of the Beach Boys, is effective as a young guy from a small-town moonshining family, who decided he’s going to take the world by storm as a champion driver. Great supporting cast includes Ned Beatty, Gary Busey, and Valerie Perrine. Kind of a cross between Monte Hellman’s Two-Lane Blacktop and Rebel Without a Cause. And understand that you don’t have to be a NASCAR enthusiast to enjoy the film - it’s just a great drama.
great old car guy movie by Michael T. Reiser
this movie is loosly based on Junior Johnson’s biography. I loved it since first seeing it in the drive in and am glad to add it to my collection

Friday Night Lights [HD DVD]Based on the perennial nonfiction bestseller by H.G. Bissinger, Friday Night Lights looks at high school football in the harsh light of reality, finding heart and hardness while stirring our emotions. Actor-director Peter Berg (Very Bad Things, The Rundown) is Bissinger’s cousin; he knows the material well, and understands how an obsession with winning turns high school kids into somber, over-pressured gladiators–expendable soldiers in a community war against shame and obscurity. The fact-based story focuses on the 1988 football season of Odessa-Permian high school in West Texas, and as a fast-paced sports movie, Berg delivers the goods with a rousing, frenetically styled crowd-pleaser. But there’s darkness in this tale of weary underdogs, including an abusive father (well-played by country music star Tim McGraw), threatening townsfolk, an injured star running back (Derek Luke), a tormented quarterback (Lucas Black), and the melancholy coach (Billy Bob Thornton) who takes his team to the finals. Berg’s film could use less flashy cutting and more drama to support its gridiron intensity, but Friday Night Lights offers a refreshing alternative to the conventional sports movie, and makes a perfect triple-feature with the equally exciting documentaries Go Tigers! and The Last Game. –Jeff Shannon

Let’s get ready to rumble by MortensOrchid
I am a woman. I am a woman who doesn’t follow sports much in real life, nor do I watch movies about sports. The only reason I picked this up was because I have a thing for Garrett Hedlund as eye candy and I am a fan of Billy Bob Thornton. I could care less about a football movie. Still, this was a good movie. Following in the footsteps of the great sports movies (The Natural, Rudy, Rocky, etc.), we are rooting for the underdog and feeling a great joy when someone triumphs over a great obsticle.
We are following the 1988 high school football season of the Panthers in a small Texas town. We are in America’s heartland, Texas, a state that practically throbs with national pride and a love of football. Football is important, and you feel the exuberance of all the star team members as they interact with the townsfolk and media. Each has their own struggle, Garret Hedlund’s probably being the most with an abusive father (Time McGraw) and his obvious popularity with the girls (gotta love that scene where the girl gives him a Rice Krispy sculpture!). Billy Bob is a stereotypical hard nosed coach, gruff and demanding. He pushes them as hard as he can. And they triumph.
A great feel good movie about overcoming. It just happens to be a sports movie too.
Friday Night Lights by S. Smith
Great movie, especially for those football buffs. Billy Bob is excellent. Realistic and heartwarming movie.
Awesome Movie by Robert Carmody
I love this movie.
The one thing I have come to appreciate is the very fact that if it were not for the misfortune of B. Miles, this movie and the recognition this team and individuals received would have never come about. One comes to the conclusion that Miles’s misfortune has followed him in many ways into adulthood.
The flaw of the movie is the many unanswered question marks left behind. For instance, was the mother of our QB hero sick or addicted ? What was the clasroom and campus atmosphere really like for the players ? What about school work and part time jobs ? The movie was grand and because of its breadth many things that should have been focused on were not.
But this movie in its grandness pulls beyond any perceived flaw it may have.
It is just awesome.
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL by Mark Turner
I’ve never been a big fan of sports but I have enjoyed far too many sports films. Some of them I came across quite by accident or due to friend’s recommendations. Others I had to see because of where I lived (HOOSIERS was directed by local resident transplanted to LA David Anspaugh). The fact is that while I never enjoyed the sports so much, I always appreciated what it was that was going on. And the movies made about sports have for the most part always turned out well.
But this movie takes things one step further than most. It gets to the heart of the game as well as the downside without using the usual contrivances of most films. Some may appear to be those, but upon closer examination you can find the differences. The big game, the problematic team member, the tough as nails coach. All are here but not quite like you may have seen them before.
Billy Bob Thornton stars as coach Gary Gaines, the coach of the Permian High Panthers from Odessa, TX. The town of Odessa worships the ground that their players walk on. Why? Because there is nothing or little else to do or find in Odessa.
This year the team has the chance to make it all the way, to be the state champs. And all hopes are residing on the shoulders of one player, Boobie Miles (Derek Luke), a player who is not only filled with talent but with an ego to match. The team rallies behind Boobie and knows that they are going to win. That is until an injury sidelines Boobie…for good.
Now if the team is to make it, they must work together and work hard to get there. The battle is not one won by an individual, but won by the team. And each and every one works in their own way to get there.
The film offers us glimpses into the lives of the players, but none to the extent that the story becomes each individual’s. Instead, it shows their trial and tribulation but keeps coming back to the team and the efforts they make to become winners. Rather than become absorbed in the off the field dramas of each, the film focuses on what goes on ON the field. It is perhaps the best shot look at football on the field that I have seen. It draws you in and places you on the field with the team, rooting for them all the way.
You feel it all in this film. The pressures to perform coming from coach and community, the need to win, the desire to be their best, the confusion of becoming a “star” in the local school and community that is passed on to these gridiron heroes. And right smack in the middle of it all is the heart that beats loud and clear, the heart that shows these youngsters were there not for the fame and glory but because they felt the need within themselves to be their best.
The film is based on the best seller by author H.G.Bissinger and based on the true story. While I am certain an amount of liberties were taken with this book, the soul is very much seen on film. One great extra on the DVD is the inclusion of a look at the players as they are today. The question of what happened to Boobie Miles after his misfortune is answered as are what became of the other teammates involved. The movie is part touching, part sports like violence and part examination of what goes on in the lives of teen sports heroes. But above all else, it is a movie that draws you in and holds you tight until the clock ticks down the final seconds of the game.
PETER BERG, OPUS 3 by wdanthemanw
***1/2 2004. Co-written and directed by Peter Berg, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is an adaptation of Buzz Bissinger’s Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream . Another football movie telling, this time, the story of a Texas high school team heading to the state championship. Good movie presenting this sport as an American rite of passage for boys.

On his way to the majors, he is cut down by an enigmatic black widow (Barbara Hershey) and vanishes for many years. When he reemerges, a silent mystery, he lands a spot with the New York team and begins tearing up the league–he’s still the natural. Fans of the Bernard Malamud novel will be dismayed at the pure mythical hokum of this film, but baseball fanatics have been known to watch and rewatch this one; after all, it’s constructed as a kind of shrine to the national pastime. Barry Levinson (Rain Man) directs the movie with an unabashed devotion to the game, although the film could use more of the realities of chewing tobacco and pine tar. Redford is fine, and Kim Basinger and Oscar-nominated Glenn Close are effective as the women in his life. The crowning touch is the soaring, extraordinary music by Randy Newman, the singer-songwriter turned orchestral composer. –Robert Horton

One of the WORST movies I’ve seen by L. Schenck
A coworker forwarded me a list of ‘20 movies that make men cry’ and the Natural was one I hadn’t gotten arount to seeing. (BTW ‘Old Yeller’ is the ONLY legitimate movie on the list.)
The only reason to cry when seeing this movie is from the pain caused by stabbing youe eyes out with an ice pick to avoid seeing any more. My very first impression was that Redford, besides being a terrible actor, looks about 30 years too old to play the ADULT character. Never mind the complete joke of him as a 19 year old. The plot is about as lame as they come and the ending is just stupid. Really NONE of the characters are believable except possibly Glenn Close but her brief screen time is not sufficient to rescue this abomination.
I realize a lot of guys will want to see this for themselves and there is that masochistic fringe that will enjoy this movie simply because it is so bad.
If you just have to subject yourself to this — rent Don’t buy!
Great movie, a bit slower than I remembered by L.R.M.
Fabulous scenary and a near perfect baseball movie. Beginning was a bit slower than I remember. We had to see the past (19 years old), getting in to the club (NY Knights), and then the rise and fall of “Bump” Bailey before we could see some great moments from Roy Hobbs.
A definite must for ones collection.
The Natural by C Go
At first this movie is a little confusing, but it is still a good movie to watch. You leave feeling good.
Completely Dissatisfied! by Nicholas Inden
I couldn’t even play my new DVD, The Natural, in my my DVD player or my 2 computers. It came scratched in the wrapping. I have never before received a inoperable product until now. Buyer beware!!
Maybe the best baseball movie of all time - but there’s one glaring flaw by Jason Elin
Let’s get this out of the way: I LOVE this movie. It’s one of the best, if not the best, baseball movies ever made. The sports action is believable, Hobbs (Redford) is an incredible character, and the musical score is phenomenal. Hobbs is, indeed, the natural. He can hit the ball so far and hard that the cover has no choice but to fly off, and an entire electrical system in a stadium is destroyed with a well-placed 750-foot homerun - surge protectors and transformer boxes be damned! Simply incredible, awe-inspiring, and it’s a requirement for any fan of sports movies.
As a kid, he was essentially a combination of Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez from The Sandlot and Kelly Leek from The Bad News Bears, except for the fact that he caught better, hit harder, and ran faster than either of the others, and didn’t have the smoking habit or the girly hair. The man was made for baseball; he’s been a superstar his entire life, the big man on campus. Then he got shot by that evil black-widow, wench Barbara Hershey for absolutely no reason (she should have shot Glenn Close).
Then he takes a ten year layoff with a bullet in his abdomen, and he’s still a BAMF sporting an average over .500 and roughly one home run every three at bats! There is simply no comparison to how awesome he was/is. He would have hit the ball right through Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn’s chest if he were on Major League (Wild Thing Edition). He would have made Kevin Costner retire before he even met Kelly Preston on For Love of the Game. He would have made Henry Rowengartner from Rookie of the Year pee himself. He would have made Jim Morris from The Rookie (Widescreen Edition) look so bad all the kids from the high school team would have quit and tried out for football. Deniro would have demanded a pay raise for Hobbs if he were in The Fan. The Angels would have just shrugged their shoulders at those two kids in Angels in the Outfield and watched the homerun sail over the fence as the Angels lost. And Hobbs would have simply murdered the entire cast of Fever Pitch (Widescreen Edition) if he were anywhere near that abomination. With all of that said, with Hobbs’ legendary status confirmed, with hordes of women no doubt swooning over his rock star status, how am I supposed to believe he would find Glenn Close attractive?
Other than that, I love the movie, and I feel it’s nearly perfect. It’s not only one of the best baseball movies ever, it’s one of the best movies ever.

Though the movie does have the somewhat predictible ending, the action is pretty much non-stop from start to finish. Good to see Howie as someone who’s a bit more serious.
Fun Bike Film by Brent Hilton
i have admitted i like this cheesy fun bike movie. it’s put together nicely although i have agree with some of other reviewers that it was’nt the best in terms of story, but hey nobody perfect. i do say that there is enough plot to follow along with it, sure it’s like all the other underdog films of the past decade, you can pretty much figure out how it will end. but you will end up cheering for these guys anyway. the stunts in this film are wonderful.
PG-13 For Lauguage.
Highly Recommended For Lazy Afternoon.
have 2 hours to burn? watch this by John E. Kaul Jr.
This movie could have been atleast a neat teen film if the director and editors didn’t shamelessly gloss up the film with Godawful graphics during race scenes. Also whoever wrote the lines for the broadcasters is probably the same one who wrote for “Gigli”, all the corny lines in the main event scene about breaking the bank, rolling snake eyes WE GET IT THEYRE IN VEGAS!!! the only thing that kept me awake in this 2 hour snoozer was Sophia Bush, sadly her beauty was wasted in this sad commentary of motocross society

Good movie, good cast, sexy guys and girls. And of course once you add the drama, BOOM….. a movie! It’s good to see actors Steve Harvey of ‘Reba’ and Sophia Bush of ‘One Tree Hill’ cast as another character and out of their element.
